The Human Behind the Scenes
My Story: The Good, The Bad and The Glitter
Hi, I’m Alley!
I graduated from Springfield College with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy while double majoring in dance. I've since gone on to further my education through certifications, courses and mentorships to treat communities I believe deserve more attention in healthcare.
But let's take a step back. How'd I get here? Well...I was the athlete to tear her ACL after getting named varsity captain of the high school soccer team. That same injury also meant I wouldn't be dancing in the Orange Bowl in Florida with the rest of my dance team. Prior to my knee, my injury history included multiple sprains wrists, multiple muscle strains, a concussion, a fractured elbow. Although going through an ACL reconstruction was hell, the rehab and my PT showed me a world into a career that felt perfect for me.
Double majoring in physical therapy and dance was no joke but I was determined. Unfortunately, my own health took a back seat for a while and I then suffered from multiple ankle sprains, a back injury, hip and knee pain, dyspareunia and a mental health crisis while a world-wide pandemic impeded on my college education. For a minute there, life was dark. But, I had a choice. I could be a victim to traumas, to extreme physical pain and a brain that seemed to be out to get me OR I could keep showing up, try new things, learn more and take action for my health and for myself. And, I had to ask for help even though it was the last thing I wanted to do.
As a queer woman and a dancer, I have experienced and educated myself on the inequities in healthcare and beyond. I have pushed through people doubting me and huge doubt in myself. I have wondered if trying and working hard will really pay off. Then, I laugh with friends on the top of a mountain, I help a dancer get her first clean pirouette, I do yardwork with my mom for hours or I enjoy a pain-free night in with the love of my life. I remember what kind of life I want: A life filled with movement and moments of joy with people I love and people I hope to help. In college, I woke up with multi-joint pain and anxiety that left me raw. Nowadays, I experienced the occasional soreness from good lift and have managed new injuries with ease and confidence.
It probably drives my family and friends crazy that I LOVE glitter, but it reminds me that we all have moments to shine (especially when we move around for fun and in the sun:)). Dynamic Wellness is my glittery dream and my hope is that a little piece of me will stick with you so we can make the world sparkle more and more even in the darkest of times.
Live in the moment. Live for a life you love. -Dr. Alley Mac
